High Mountain Storm Clouds, 40x30in

Sedona, AZ artist Judy Choate is passionate about creating unusual fine art with her recent discovery of an abstract painting style not seen anywhere else.

Although she had taken watercolor art classes at community colleges and with private teachers, Judy’s recent switch to acrylic on canvas was a result of perceptive advice from her friend, neighbor and notable art gallery owner, James Ratliff of the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. It was this change of medium that propelled Judy to entirely new art experiences.

Misty Mountain, 16x12in

Green Fields, 36x18in

Because she is still developing her unique style, Judy works from small studies in acrylic, progressing to medium and large size canvasses and allowing a work to evolve its own path. Judy says that “errors” in fact are opportunities to grow.

This is only half of the passionate part.

Gathering Storm, 24x36in

Skies Aflame, 36x18in

Judy has ventured into the competitive acrylic art scene after the age of 60. Her driving motivation – work quickly while inspiration, enthusiasm and skill are accelerating.

Two characteristics that make Judy’s work unique – her energetic bold brush work and her fearless approach to using complementary color palettes.

Judy builds tremendous movement within an art piece by allowing bold diagonal brush strokes evoke the mysterious peaks and valleys and vistas of her abstract landscapes. Many of her art pieces suggest the rugged land formations of Arizona’s slot canyons, cascading mesa formations, changeable streams, rugged and ancient trees and even fields of corn. The light source position may emerge somewhere unexpected. Judy lets the light, its color and position evolve as she works her broad brush strokes.

As Judy plays with color choices in distinctive palettes, instinct and progressing experience together shape new directions for both mood and subject matter in her artwork. A new and distinctive style uniquely her own is emerging.

Bright colors and bold cut lines can infuse art quilts with energy in much the same way as these acrylic works of art.
