Springtime Blue Hues

Four Seasons in One Recess

Where I live, north of Toronto in Canada, we still have ice on our pond. Gray blue snow drifts linger in deep shadowy pockets beside our bumpy rural road. The salt trucks have not been put to sleep in municipal garages. Early morning driving conditions can still be dangerously icy. Winter lingers.

Yet, the robins are back in town. They’re pecking at our windows. That means Spring’s warmth is near at hand. I see maple sap being collected for maple syrup. Night temperatures must be above freezing for the sap to run. The calendar announces Spring is officially here and I see robin’s egg blue in the sky.

One day last week I saw people wearing shorts outside in record breaking daytime temperatures 70F, or 22C. I saw a Blue Jay swooping down on invisible prey. Summer around the corner already?

March went out like a lion. We wake up to more snow. Just like the lazy snows of autumn, this new snow doesn’t stay around for long.

We use blue a lot in our vocabulary. I think that’s because this one word can express facts and emotions, easily understood – out of the blue, once in a blue moon, singing the blues, true blue, blueblood.

In our fabric and dye choices we can select sapphire, azure, beryl, cerulean, cobalt, indigo, navy, royal and cyan. We can choose sky blue, baby blue, cornflower blue, midnight blue, steel blue, slate blue and Prussian blue.

Enjoy this collection of photos of cool and crisp blues that appeal to me for my quilt artwork. All photos are credited and allowable for limited use at Creative Commons.

Somewhere along the spectrum teal blue becomes aqua. I couldn’t resist this mosaic. This photo alone would inspire an art quilt.
