Knowing My Goals Before Building My New Website, Quilts For Special Kids

Revising my Quilts4U website to improve marketing of the Children’s Quilts

another in the Internet Skills series of posts

Recently I created a new website for the sale of my children’s quilts. I wanted to focus just on quilts for kids, allowing for a more dedicated presentation of my art quilts on my original website, Quilt4U. I started by defining my goals for the new website.

Being found on the web is paramount. There are many sites selling children’s quilts. I decided to use the word Kids rather than Childrens because Kids is shorter and snappier. Kids is what people say nowadays.  4U may not be classy but it’s quick and relevant to browsers/buyers – it’s what people type in a search window.

I believe both kids and quilts are special. When I researched what words people are using in searches I learned that both kids and special are frequently used. So I put the two words together and luckily my choice was available, Quilts For Special Kids.

One of the goals in building a second website was to have a shorter menu in the sidebars of both websites. Another goal was to get an image widget/module in the left sidebar of both websites to notify viewers that I have more to offer.

I also wanted to simplify and improve the features of both websites that are evaluated by Search Engines.

One way to improve Search Engine Optimization is to provide a significant amount of information on the site’s topic – information that search engines consider to be relevant. On both my websites, I have links to “Learn More” pages that contain what I consider to be relevant quilt related topics.

Some of these articles are posts from this blog. Reproducing a small amount of original content on 2 websites is not enough to be “penalized” by Search Engines for duplicate use of material. More info on Search Engines, and more

Updating your “Learn More” articles with new content is also important to Search Engines. It indicates you are active and continue to enhance your site. In the words of quilt artist Paula Nadelstern, “More is more.”

Your goals for your website will differ. What’s important is that you know what you want the end result to resemble before you start to build. New and better ideas will develop over time. A Website is a work in progress. In fact if you don’t make changes, your ranking could suffer.
