Modern Quilting

Blog Review of The Modern Quilt Guild

The Modern Quilt Guild blog is barely 5 months old and so has few features to review. Yet I believe it will become an important blog for quilters of all kinds and I suggest you  bookmark it. The goal for The Modern Quilt Guild is to be a forum for quilt guilds around the world.

So far the hottest topic of discussion has been, “What does ‘modern quilting’ mean to you?” From the many quilters who have responded to this open question, a recap of responses was posted on Feb, 12, 2010.

The post begins with a quotation made by Jonathan Jones, Art Critic: “Every generation wants to believe it has broken with the past. When we praise art as modern we’re saying it seems urgent and meaningful to us now – and that can be as true of a cave painting as a Damien Hirst virtrine.”

The article continues, “ This quote perfectly captures the spirit of what is meant by the word “Modern” in The Modern Quilt Guild. Modern quilting is quilting in a style that seems “urgent and meaningful to us now”. This statement resonates deeply with the majority of those who identify with the modern quilting movement. If you think about it, “modern quilting in any time reflects quilting that is urgent and meaningful at that time.

Modern quilting is not radically different than traditional quilting and it is a progression, a next step in the evolutionary development. It respects the craft and history of traditional quilts and the quilters who made them. A modern quilter will incorporate the parts of traditional quilting that works for him or her and the parts that don’t will be molded and formed into something that does.”

An amazing link takes us to a Google archive search result of 97 references to “modern quilting” that date from 1930 to March, 2010.  Not surprising, the bulk of these references are from the past decade.

“So often we read in reviews of quilt exhibits the phrase “grandmother would roll over in her grave”, and this very phrase is quoted in an article written in 1934. Seventy-five years ago, the progression in older vs newer was remarked upon in the Nancy Page Quilt Club.”

“Quilt clubs and guilds have been in existence for many decades, and The Modern Quilt Guild is another incarnation. It’s a cyberspace meeting place for guilds around the globe. It’s a great new era for all quilters who embrace innovation and the future of an art form that has been dated back to to the ice ages. (Quilt like clothing has been discovered on frozen (the Andes) and mummified remains, (Egyptian)).”

As shown by the ” ” marks, this post references the blog post on The Modern Quilt Guild website.
