thanks Jim for this comment. It can be a lot of work getting permissions. In one blog post I wanted to use a photo of a quilt that was loosely based on a landscape watercolor print. I contacted the quilt maker who said yes, but she also said I should contact the artist of the watercolor, who had given the quilt artist permission to interpret his work. I do wonder if this step was really necessary to be copyright “legal”.

Thank you for this article. As I and my partner progress in this world of quilting and art quilts, I am always atune the possibilities. I make it a point to make a distinction between using a design, being inspired by a design or just “starting a train of though.” I always attempt to provide a bit of a history with our works as well as I attempt to contact the originator of the design and/or photo.
